Tales From Beyond on DVD...
So long since I stopped by here, but that seems to be the trend these days. I arrived from India almost 3 weeks ago and am scheduled to return very soon to finish filming/directing "Maya". I was there for 12 weeks and what an incredible experience it was; personally, spiritually & professionally. I worked with many amazing people and have many stories to share. All in time, but right now I'm looking forward and am pleased to announce my first feature "Tales From Beyond" will be available at Blockbuster, Hollywood Video & many other places on October 24th. What a long strange trip that project has been. You can check out more about it at anthemdvd.com. Well, if anyone is still out there, take care and I'll be back. The writing on the screens...
I can't believe it has been so long since writing in this thing. Well, this year has been a lot about waiting and learning that you can only trust and depend on people so far. So hopefully soon I'll be set for Kerala, India directing my first real feature. I'm looking forward to the winter break, freezing my ass off in PA. Let it snow, let it snow... So there are plenty of old friends I need to look up and hopefully they will be receptive of my contacting them. I still enjoy D&D and need to make time to play once again. Actually I'm working on a script "The Moon's Tear" that taps into all those years of playing... The list of special thanks will be long... Many adventures, many characters & quotes, many good times... The D&D sequel is soon out on DVD and I heard it wasn't bad. The plan is to take the script to those involved in such films and produce with them my own. I don't even need 15 million to pull it off. Less is definitely more in the CGI world. My website (westboundpictures.com) will soon be up. "The Inside Job" is finished and will be up on the site, along with a Super-8mm b&w short "Invasion of Privacy" I did around 10 years ago and the "Tales From Beyond" trailer. Anyway, need to run to lunch, more later... The subject btw is about what is going on in film today... with 100 million plus losses from the majors, people really are sick of the shit choices out there... Discouraging? Hell no, it only makes me more sure of my purpose on this spinning droplet. "Roads... where we're going..." The Dark Knight & green screens
Well, he certainly is back. The dark knight that is. I went and saw Batman Begins on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. Very cool film. Mr. Bale is really perfect for the role as is all of the supporting cast. I loved the back story of how Bruce procures all of his wonderful toys. The look and feel of Gotham was great. The only things I didn't like was not enough time spent on the Scarecrow (which I thought Cillian Murphy did an amazing job with) and the fight scenes were filmed in too many close-ups. I will be working with green screens very soon on a short film I'm shooting in a few weeks. I've worked with them before but not to this extent. I am shooting an office scene where there are spectacular views of the LA skyline around 30 stories up. So all of the views will dropped in behind the actors that are in the office set, with green walls. I feel a bit like Mr. Lucas. I prefer on location shooting, but with a minimal budget (just under the Sith budget, ha!) this will hopefully look great and really capture the feel of the corporate power player. The project "The Inside Job" centers around a seven foot Russian man going to a job interview that leads to deadly results. It will run around ten minutes and be submitted to all kinds of festivals. Somewhere on Hollywood Blvd.
First I must say that I am finding this journal thing to be quite enjoyable. Living in a land where talk is as cheap as bits of trash on the street, I've learned that writing is a purer glimpse into someone's true feelings, values, etc. Taking the time to really think about what to say somehow cleanses the bullsh*t out one's fabric. I could be infinitely naive about this however. Anyway, last night I went to a gathering at a place called the Vangaard out in Hollywood somewhere. It was a party to benefit Cystic Fibrosis and I got to do a little schmoozing while there. Nothing too exciting however, I'm mostly focused on this film that hopefully I'll be directing in India in the near future. I'll write more about that later. I did meet one actress that might be perfect for this short film I want to shoot in the next few weeks. She was quite attractive although her headshots did not really reflect that (she looked much younger in person) and had a pleasant and seemingly grounded personality. We'll see how she does at the auditions soon. In addition to her, I met yet another handsome guy that never has acted before but everyone tells him he should and hell, he might just give it a shot...etc. In this town, this field, there are no rules, but let me tell you, all the greats paid their f*cking dues, no matter how hot, young, well hung etc. they were. I wanted to through my vodka gimlet over an open flame and into this clown's face, but bad karma just ain't my scene. I smiled, listened to his monologue and moved on. I feel great knowing that I have paid my dues and know the game and am playing my own hand, instead of being played. There is no luck in this universe, unless we're talkin' natural 20s and I'm dming. Steve Vai & the Goonies
So yesterday was Mr. Vai's 45th birthday, which I did take a moment to celebrate and today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of The Goonies. Both of these played a major role in shaping who I am today. I started playing guitar after seeing Crossroads in 1986. "Real good guitar player, named ah Jack Butler." I finally purchased a guitar that will let me play without limitations at the end of March (after 19 years of playing). She's a 2005 Ibanez Jem 77brmr (named Mira). I'll post a pic of her when I figure that function out. I just need to purchase an Imac with Logic Pro (already have a Podxt) and then I will finally get back to recording all the swirling melodies in my head. The goal is to have an instrumental album completed by the end of this year. Peace, love and good happiness stuff... thanks Mr. Willy, he was the first...
